So what are the costs of boxes then?

We would strongly recommend not buying cheap cardboard boxes. In the consumer world, you’ll no doubt be familiar with the phrase “You get what you pay for.” And that’s no different when it comes to boxes. If you buy a cheap cardboard box, it’s unlikely to be fit for purpose, leaving you with high damages and returns, and unhappy customers.

What’s the difference between a single and double wall box?

It may be obvious, but single wall boxes should always be cheaper than double wall boxes. This is due to the extra corrugated board used to manufacture a double wall box. As a double wall box offers additional strength, it is generally used to pack heavy items, and as such, you can expect to pay more for it. If you see a double wall box cheaper than a single, it’s probably worth giving it a miss!

Here’s a great example. If you think about a cereal box, its contents totals just a few hundred grams, which is why it’s made from a single layer of cardboard. Whereas a box that is used for packing, or moving house, requires considerably more strength, and it is commonly referred to as a corrugated cardboard box.

The images below show an example of a single wall, and a double wall box. You can see there is fluting in between the layers of board, and this is what gives the box its durability and strength. A cereal box has no fluting, and is effectively a really thick piece of paper!

If you are shopping around for box suppliers, always think “Buy cheap, buy twice” and that will give you a good basis to make your purchasing decision. But if you are unsure of anything, talk to a Packaging Expert. We’re here to work with you to understand exactly what you need, and how best we can offer you a solution.
