How to measure a Cardboard Box

Standard cardboard box dimensions are Length x Width x Height, and this is the order we would recommend you measure the box.
The Length (L) is always the longest opening dimension, and the Width (W) is the shortest. The Height (H) or depth of the box, is the distance between the top and the bottom of the box. Square boxes should all have equal sides, or dimensions, but it’s always worth double checking prior to making a purchase of any new boxes.
Standard, Long and Tall cardboard boxes are all measured in the same way, and here’s a handy picture for how to measure your box:
Choosing the right tools for the job
To measure a cardboard box, the first thing you’ll need is a cardboard box! You’ll also need either a ruler or a measuring tape, and something to note down the measurements.
Step 1
First of all, you will need to put the box together, or erect it. It’s always best to tape up the box, to ensure you get the right measurements, and offer extra stability when measuring. You may wish to fill the box with products too.
Step 2
Measure, measure, measure! We would always recommend measuring in both inches (“) and millimetres (mm). For a standard size box, you will likely quote the size in inches, but for a bespoke box, it’s probably best to use mm to ensure you are getting the exact size that is required.

Additional options
Many boxes have a ‘multiscore’ feature, which simply means you can cut them to a desired size. This therefore allows you to vary the height, or depth, of the box.
To make use the ‘multiscore’ feature, simply cut between the existing flaps, and you’re done. It really is as easy as that!
